Luggage Lessons

Prevent injuries and strain by planning ahead

Hoisting a heavy suitcase into your car or the overhead bin on an airplane can lead to neck, back and shoulder injuries, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). For people with bleeding disorders, wrestling with luggage can also cause bruises or bleeds.

Before heading off on that dream vacation, prevent injuries or strain by following these AAOS recommendations:

•    Use several small bags instead of one large piece of luggage.

•    Take the elevator or escalator, rather than stairs.

•    Bend from the knees, not waist, when lifting a suitcase.

•    Don’t twist your body when lifting or carrying luggage.
