According to the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, published by the US departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services, coffee is cool, but salt and sugar are not. The guidelines are updated every five years with the latest science-based evidence on how food affects us.

Recommendations include:

  • Eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Make half your grains whole grains
  • Less than 10% of your daily calories should come from fats
  • Eggs are now listed among good sources of protein, along with fish, lean meat and poultry
  • Limit your sodium intake to less than 2,300 milligrams daily; less if you’re under 14 years old
  • Less than 10% of your daily calories should come from added sugars
  • Consume low-fat or fat-free dairy products
  • Moderate coffee consumption can be part of a healthy diet
